And Now, a Tweet from Our Sponsors

Shaquille O’Neal recently used Twitter to announce his new endorsement deal with electrolyte sports strips brand Enlyten. Just another tweet?
Not quite. Madison Avenue took notice because it was believed to be the first time an athletic endorser used Twitter, not the media, to reveal a deal.
With Shaq leading the way, other endorsers are trying to figure out how to use the service to tout their sponsors, says Kathleen Hessert, O’Neal’s media consultant. She expects some endorsers to charge sponsors for Twitter plugs. And for Twitter mentions to become a standard part of contracts.
“It’s the Wild West out there. People are learning as they go,” says Hessert, president of Sports Media Challenge in Charlotte. “People are so intrigued. But they don’t know how to use it.”
